KARL S. PERMAN
DIRECTOR
Karl Perman serves as Director at Homeland Security Solutions. As a former law enforcement officer and well-respected security professional, Mr. Perman brings over 30-years of critical infrastructure, business protection, compliance, risk management and law enforcement experience to his role. Working closely with businesses, utilities and government agencies, as well as the first responder community, he assists with the development and implementation of strategic, value-added solutions which advance the broad mission of addressing the needs of the homeland security enterprise and critical infrastructures therein.
Over the course of his career, Mr. Perman has developed and implemented critical infrastructure protection programs, developed security technology infrastructure to protect assets, created vulnerability assessments in diverse environments, established organizational strategies and value-added security programs, and led high-level, complex investigations of criminal conduct and employee misconduct.
Prior to joining Homeland Security Solutions, Mr. Perman served as a professional consultant directing compliance, security, reliability and risk projects for numerous energy firms. In this capacity, he created NERC CIP compliance programs for electric utilities, designed security controls for electric, gas and water generators and utilities, and developed vulnerability assessments and asset classification methodologies in electric operations. His career also includes such senior level positions as: Director of Security, North American Transmission Forum; Manager, Infrastructure Protection and Regulatory Compliance at Exelon Corporation; and Manager, Corporate Investigative and Protective Services at Southern California Edison.
Mr. Perman earned his Master’s in Public Safety Administration from Lewis University and a Bachelor Science in Public Law and Government from Eastern Michigan University. His higher education also includes his successful completion of a Security Executive Leadership Program at Northwestern University and an Advanced Human Resource Executive Program at the University of Michigan. Additionally, he holds a Professional Certification in Labor Relations from Cornell University, and has served as a Police Officer in both Illinois and Michigan and as a Special Agent for the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration.
An active member of the security field, Mr. Perman’s professional affiliations and appointments include: ASIS International Economic Crime Council, Vice Chair of the National Board of Information Security Examiners (NBISE) Smart Grid Control Panel, Member of the Board of Advisors of the National Electric Sector Cybersecurity Organization, Member of InfraGard, Security Magazine Editorial Advisory Board Member and Security Technology Executive Board of Advisors. He is a published author of numerous articles pertaining to security and management in leading security industry journals and trade publications, including Security magazine, Security Technology Executive magazine, and Security Management magazine. In 2011, he was named to Security magazine’s “Most Influential People in Security.”
